CES 2020: Continental, Sennheiser tie up to offer speakerless audio system for cars

Carmakers will soon be able to save space inside vehicles by getting rid of massive speaker systems.

Automotive components maker Continental has partnered with audio expert Sennheiser to offer a new premium sound experience for vehicles.

The two companies have introduced a speakerless audio system for the vehicle interior. This was made possible through Sennheiser’s patented AMBEO 3D audio technology and Continental’s Ac2ated Sound system, which reduces weight and space of audio systems by up to 90%.

It works by exciting select surfaces inside the vehicle to produce 3D sound that envelops passengers in a detailed and clear soundscape, the companies said.

Through the technology, automakers will not only offer an improved sound quality for their lineup of cars, but it will also conserve space inside the vehicles.

“For Ac2ated Sound we have brought together the highest levels of expertise in the areas of acoustics, infotainment and vehicle design. In Sennheiser we have found an audio expert who helped us make our pioneering audio system even better,” Continental executive Helmut Matschi was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, Sennheiser co-CEO Daniel Sennheiser said: “Our AMBEO immersive audio solutions deliver the ultimate quality in sound capture, processing and playback. Crucially, the ability to enjoy breathtaking immersive sound does not require specific 3D audio sources – AMBEO Mobility’s spatialization algorithm can turn any stereo material into an immersive experience.”

Continental and Sennheiser will showcase this latest sound technology for cars at the CES 2020 from today until Friday, January 10. Visitors will be able to experience the sound quality of this new speakerless audio system.
