Playdate confirms 2020 release after making hardware updates

Playdate is the next big thing in gaming.

Panic Inc., the developer of the upcoming Playdate, has confirmed that the long-awaited console is coming in 2020.

The confirmation comes nearly eight months after Panic first announced the Playdate on the cover of the Edge magazine.

Playdate is one of the most highly anticipated gaming consoles to arrive in 2020. This year, Sony is also set to debut its followup to its PlayStation lineup, the PlayStation 5.

Meanwhile, Panic said it is currently testing Playdate with developers before it starts taking pre-orders. The Playdate Developer Preview will roll out before the official release to consumers. Panic will randomly pick a number of recipients for its beta.

The company added that it made changes to Playdate’s hardware, with the circuit board design adjusted to pass a number of RF emissions tests. With the updates to the hardware, Panic said Playdate will now be more durable as it was fitted with a brand new crank using an all metal-to-metal contact on its surfaces.

The Playdate, to be priced at $149, will come with 12 pre-installed games, with each game releasing a week apart.

To support its Playdate launch, Panic has been hosting Playdate Mini-Expo pop-up events.

“Japan has created many handheld game devices, and I wanted to give Japanese people an opportunity to actually touch it before start preordering. In Nagoya and Kobe visitors were super amazed at the super sharp and bright display looks like e-ink not LCD and compact size is Japanese favorite. A visitor even said the AB buttons made me want to lick it,” Panic’s Nobuhiro Hasegawa said in a statement.
