Pepsi vows to give out free Zero Sugar across US if Super Bowl score ends in zero

If nobody wins the big game, the whole of America will.

Pepsi, which has been sponsoring the Super Bowl Halftime Show since 2012, is launching an unlikely campaign during the Big Game this year.

The soft-drinks giant said it will be offering everyone in the United States a free Pepsi Zero Sugar drink if the Super Bowl LIV game ends in zero.

Pepsi’s campaign, called "America Wins Zero,” will allow any Super Bowl fan in the U.S. reimburse the cost of a free Pepsi Zero Sugar for purchases made between February 2 and 4.

Pepsi noted that the last two occurrences of a game ending in a score of zero for both teams were during the 2007 and 2016 Super Bowl games. From 1986 and 1991, Super Bowl made history with a record six straight years of games ended in zero.

The company, which also offers snacks under brands such as Cheetos, Lay’s and Doritos, said that of the 53 previous Super Bowl games, 25% capped off with at least one team with a score of zero.

This campaign follows the launch of Pepsi’s Zero Sugar drink in 2019. This 2020, Pepsi said Zero Sugar will have a new design, a matte black finish and a distinctive black tab.

Starting February 1, Pepsi said the new Pepsi Zero Sugar matte black cans will be available on all JetBlue flights.

The company added that this year’s Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Year winner will receive a custom matte black Pepsi Zero Sugar trophy. The award is given to the highest fan-voted honor for NFL Rookies.

"At Pepsi, we are always looking for new ways to meet the evolving preferences of our consumers, and we know that people increasingly are looking for sugar-free options… We've learned that once people discover the great taste of Pepsi Zero Sugar, they can't get enough of it and keep going back for more. So we are going "all in" on Pepsi Zero Sugar this year and have created a bold, unapologetic new look to match its great taste, with a new matte black can and a black tab that will stand out anywhere,” Pepsi’s Vice President for Marketing Todd Kaplan said.

The 2020 Super Bowl, or Super Bowl LIV, will be taking place on Sunday, February 2 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.

Luxury carmaker Porsche has also confirmed that it is releasing its first Super Bowl ad in 23 years, featuring the electric Taycan.
