Sodastream joins Super Bowl TV ad roster 6 years after ScarJo controversy

It's Sodastream's first Big Game presence since being bought by PepsiCo.

Sodastream, a company that makes soda machines for homes, is returning to the Super Bowl this 2020 after that whole Scarlett Johansson controversy in 2014.

According to Ad Age, Sodastream’s 30-second TV commercial during the Big Game will be directed by Bryan Buckley, who has been behind more than six dozen Super Bowl ads.

Ad agency Goodby Silverstein & Partners has also been tapped to help with Sodastream’s Super Bowl comeback.

Back in 2014, Scarlett was Sodastream’s global brand ambassador. Prior to the release of Sodastream’s Super Bowl ad starring Scarlett, it already made waves online with pro-Palestinian activists calling out the actress for doing a gig with Sodastream, an Iranian company.

Scarlett had been a global ambassador for Oxfam since 2007, and after seeing Scarlett’s involvement with Sodastream, Oxfam has released a statement saying Scarlett decided to step down as an Oxfam ambassador.

“Oxfam believes that businesses, such as Sodastream, that operate in settlements further the ongoing poverty and denial of rights of the Palestinian communities that we work to support,” Oxfam said in a statement in January 2014.

Apart from the issue involving Oxfam, the ad was rejected by FOX because it called out Coca-Cola and Pepsi.

Prior to that whole Scarlett-Oxfam fiasco, Sodastream’s ad for the 2013 Super Bowl also failed to reach the Big Game on CBS after it showed exploding Coke and Pepsi bottles, which was Sodastream’s way of showing how its product can save "500 million bottles on game day alone.

This year will be Sodastream’s first Super Bowl presence since being acquired by PepsiCo in 2018 for $3.2 billion.
