The Best Security Software For Your PC

Introduction

Threats litter the Internet. No matter which part of the Internet you’re on, there’s bound to be some scam or some shady deal happening under your nose. Why wouldn’t there be? The Internet gives everyone the anonymity needed to participate in crimes and shady stuff.

But just because these threats run rampant everywhere doesn’t mean you have to be caught in between them. On the contrary, in fact. There’s no shortage of security software that can protect you and your identity while on the Internet. Sure, you may need to pay for some of these, but I think the security you gain from paying is worth the $10-or-so.

A Virtual Private Network

A virtual private network, VPN for short, enables the ability to hide your identity. How does it accomplish that?

A VPN takes your IP address and simply hides it. To accomplish that, a VPN will assign you a “cover” IP address different from your real one. Your data is then routed through a VPN server in a country of your choosing, which is why VPNs are pretty popular for bypassing content restrictions.

You do need to spend money on a subscription for a VPN, but you can always find a VPN discount. VPNs are an absolute necessity in this day and age, so be sure to find a reputable VPN provider, buy their VPN, and set it up!

A Malware Scanner

Most operating systems lack the need for dedicated anti-virus software. Windows Defender, the included anti-virus software for Windows, does a good enough job on it’s own, MacOS doesn’t suffer from viruses near as much as other OS’s, and Linux…not many viruses are designed for Unix-based software (though, they’re not invincible).

However, one piece of software you do need is a malware scanner. These scanners are designed to point out and quarantine various forms of malware (adware, spyware, etc.).

Malware is designed to go under the radar of anti-virus software, so a good malware scanner is worth it. Best part is? Most malware scanners are free for the basic scan/quarantine combo, which is all you need.

Malwarebytes saved my laptop from being completely destroyed when I was a kid, so I will swear by anti-malware software till the end of my days!

A Configured Firewall

Firewalls have been a staple of network security for decades, and firewalls are a standard for most PCs nowadays, with Windows coming with it’s own built-in firewall. However, while most people use a firewall, not many actually take the time to configure the firewall to their needs and situations.

Granted, learning all of the settings, ports, and various other options a firewall gives you takes a lot of time to learn and work through, but I highly recommend taking that time to learn, since a firewall can protect you from some nasty threats.

Fortunately, there are plenty of guides online that can help you configure your firewall to your needs.

A Configured Router

Your router may be hardware, but the software for it is what I want to focus on. With the IP address and password configured on your router, you can log into the router’s settings, which allows you to configure connection settings, security settings, and ports that are open and closed.

Everyone should go into this software and configure the appropriate settings, as making it more difficult for people to connect to your network and spread is an invaluable ability to have.

Conclusion

As I said at the beginning of this article, there are many threats to be found on the Internet, but it’s not like you’re defenseless. There are tons of security software available, and all of them offer different solutions to different problems, and when used all at once, can create a security paradise.

Don’t delay your security; go ahead and start building a secure foundation on the Internet!
