Super Bowl 2020: Americans estimated to eat 1.4 billion chicken wings on game day

Should chicken wings be the official food of the Super Bowl?

The annual Super Bowl game has always been the avenue for snack brands to market their products as NFL fans and viewers across the United States are all hooked to their televisions watching the Big Game while munching on some snacks.

The most popular game day food include tortilla chips, pretzels, potato chips, dips and chicken wings.

The National Chicken Council has just released its forecast for this year’s Super Bowl LIV, saying Americans are projected to consume a record-breaking 1.4 billion chicken wings during the Super Bowl weekend, about 27 million more wings than last year. That represents a 2% increase year over year.

The council has also conducted a survey asking Americans how they “wing it.” The NCC has found that 65% of those surveyed claim they like to eat chicken wings while watching a major sporting event like the Super Bowl, while 51% of those asked believe chicken wings should be the official food of the Super Bowl.

“Football is great. Wings are great. But they're even better together… Sure, you can have your chips, your guacamole, your pizza. But when it comes to Super Bowl menus, wings rule the roost. So grab a wet nap, dive in and help put a dent in that 1.4 billion,” NCC spokesman Tom Super said.

Meanwhile, Buffalo Wild Wings and Hooters are in a chicken wings battle, both offering to give away free wings if the Super Bowl goes into overtime.

The 2020 Super Bowl, or Super Bowl LIV, will be taking place on Sunday, February 2 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.
