Nintendo to offer pop-up airport lounges where people can play Switch games and earn rewards

Travelers at major airports in the U.S. will soon be able to play Nintendo Switch games as they wait for their flights.

Nintendo is ramping up its marketing efforts with a whole new strategy to boost its exposure after launching campus tours last year.

Last year, from September 30 until October 1, 2019, Nintendo went on a tour of college campuses, letting students play Nintendo games — such as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, Super Mario Party, and Super Mario Maker 2 — at colorful Nintendo Switch kiosks.

Now, Nintendo is back to offer a similar service, but this time, for individuals who are traveling. Nintendo has just announced that it will roll out a one-of-a-kind pop-up experience at select airports in the U.S., letting travelers play Nintendo Switch games for free as they wait for their flight.

The Nintendo Switch On The Go pop-up airport lounges will offer Nintendo Switch and Switch Lite games for travelers starting tomorrow, February 13, at at select major U.S. airports.

The pilot will be available at the Dallas Love Field Airport in Dallas, Texas, from tomorrow until March 26. Starting February 17, Nintendo Switch On The Go pop-up airport lounges will literally pop up at the Dulles International Airport in Washington D.C., the Seattle – Tacoma International Airport in Seattle, Washington, and at the O’Hare International Airport in Chicago, Illinois, until March 29.

The pop-up lounges will feature comfortable seating, charging ports and Nintendo Switch game demos that can be played in handheld mode or in TV mode. The games to be offered include popular titles such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Mario Odyssey, Super Mario Party and Tetris 99.

At the very lounges, Nintendo will also sell Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite systems and for every order, customers will receive a free carrying case.

Those who stop by the Nintendo pop-up lounges will also receive a free Nintendo Switch branded luggage handle wrap and a $10 coupon from Target to use on any Nintendo purchase of $75 or more.

The announcement comes as Nintendo prepares for the release of its new Nintendo Switch Special Edition Animal Crossing Console, which is scheduled for release on March 13.

Customers can now pre-order the device at $299.99 ahead of its release. The Nintendo Switch Animal Crossing console has pastel green and blue Joy-Con controllers that are reminiscent of the colors in the Animal Crossing: New Horizons game. The back portion of the controller is white, giving it a different feel from its predecessor, the original Nintendo Switch.

Nintendo is releasing the new console to mark the upcoming launch of the new Switch game, the Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which can be pre-ordered as early as now for $59.99.
