MWC Barcelona 2020 canceled over coronavirus fears

The announcement comes amid the growing number of casualties from the virus, with the death toll now exceeding 1,300.

Following the withdrawal of some of the biggest tech companies like Amazon, Sony and Intel, among many others, from the 2020 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona due to fears surrounding the coronavirus outbreak, the event’s organizer, GSMA, has decided to cancel the annual trade show.

GSMA, a trade organization for the global mobile industry, has been hosting the annual trade show in Barcelona since 2006.

In a statement, GSMA said: “With due regard to the safe and healthy environment in Barcelona and the host country today, the GSMA has cancelled MWC Barcelona 2020 because the global concern regarding the coronavirus outbreak, travel concern and other circumstances, make it impossible for the GSMA to hold the event.”

The organization, however, said it will continue to be working with its partners for the 2021 MWC Barcelona.

The 2020 MWC would have hosted an exciting lineup of talks from industry experts including speakers from Qualcomm, Tech Mahindra, VMWare, Airbus, AT&T, Google Cloud, Kaspersky, Nokia, NTT Docomo and many more.

Companies who are scheduled to release new hardware products have now considered other measures. Earlier, Sony said it will instead host its own conference online on YouTube.

The decision to cancel this year’s MWC in Barcelona comes amid the growing novel coronavirus outbreak that originated in Wuhan, China. The death toll from the disease has already exceeded 1,300, with more than 60,000 cases reported to date.

The disease has now been named as the 2019-nCoV.
