To date the biggest ever launch of a video game was Halo 3 which made about $300 million USD in its first week. Halo 3 was subsequently blamed for some in Hollywood for the poor 2007 box office season.

Take-Two, publisher of the upcoming Grand Theft Auto IV game is reportedly set to sell $400 million USD in its first week. The information reportedly comes from sources close to the publisher.

Eurogamer says that publishers are able to very accurately predict the first week sales of a game based on how many copies of the title retailers ordered. GTA IV is expected to outsell Halo 3 in part due to the fact that GTA IV will hit the PS3 whereas Halo 3 was an Xbox exclusive.
