Downloads of games, ring tines and music over mobile phones is a big business in the UK racking up in the area of £350m per year. However, as the industry grows more and more mobile phone users are complaining of charges that weren’t expected.

According to regulator PhonepayPlus the mobile download industry will be probed for misleading users of premium download services. The regulator says that complaints from mobile users have gone up by 40% this year alone.

"There are clear rules when it comes to the promotion, content and delivery of mobile phone paid services," said George Kidd, PhonepayPlus chief executive. "We expect these rules to be followed and any failings of compliance will be punished."
