During the format wars the gang form Microsoft were firmly behind the HD DVD format and while the Xbox 360 game console never offered an internal HD DVD player you could get the HD DVD add-on. With the format wars over and HD DVD going the way of the Dodo Microsoft has been denying it would offer a Blu-ray add-on for its console.

According to The Inquirer it seems that was mostly true. Apparently there will be no Blu-ray add-on for the Xbox 360; rather a new version of the console will sell with an internal Blu-ray player. The Inq says that rumors were previously going around of a new update for the 360 this August allowing for smaller memory chips, a new ATI graphics engine and cooler running on the whole.

Now The Inquirer says that a Chinese newspaper has it that Pegatron Technology will be building the new 360 and in addition to the new components, the internal Blu-ray will be added. The new GPU core would be required to offload the processing needed to decode Blu-ray from the Xbox processor. Of course this could all be wrong; you know what they say about rumors.
