High on the list of improvements for any gadget or cell phone user is longer run time and faster battery charging. A new patent application has turned up from Apple for a system of integrated solar cells behind an LCD display.

This could mean that eventually we will see devices like the MacBook or iPhone shipping with solar panels behind the LCD screen to help charge and supplement their power needs. According to the patent application the solar cell power available could also be displayed on the screen of the gadget.

According to Register Hardware Motorola introduced a LCD screen that allowed 75% of light to get through, opening the way for solar panels under its LCDs as well. The large glass area of a device like the iPhone would make for an ideal solar panel using mobile device.
