Researchers looking for ways to reduce traffic and improve road conditions say that buses could be turned into mobile sensing platforms. The buses would be outfitted with on-board sensors for environment, cameras and GPS.

Data from the buses would be transmitted wirelessly over mobile phone networks, Wi-Fi and WiMAX. Technology is also said to be in the works to detect when fights break out on buses. The data is hoped to be able to warn motorists of traffic jams and accidents as well as detecting fog and ice on roadways.

"The devices are quite small but very powerful, and we could develop software that could analyse images to detect if a fight breaks out on the bus, for example, and automatically alert the police." he said.
