Toyota has announced that it is considering the inclusion of a solar panel on the roof of future Prius hybrids. The catch is that with solar panel tech in use now and the small amount of space available for solar panels the inclusion of a solar panel will not help the cars range.

According to The Register the only thing the inclusion of a solar panel will offer is the ability to provide a portion of the power needed to run the Prius’ AC system. The panels may allow Prius owners to run the AC for a bit longer before the engine starts.

Due to the fact that it is an insignificant amount of power that can be provided by the solar panels, many wonder why Toyota would even bother and view it as nothing more than a PR stunt. You can also already buy accessory solar panels that would do the same job.
