It’s pretty normal today to replace your computer every few years. While some think a computer might not last any longer than that, the reality is that with the constant increase in performance after a few years even the cheapest new systems can be vastly superior in performance to what was high-end a few years before.

That said if you are looking for ways to extend the life of your computer, the author of PCs for Dummies has ten tips for you.

  1. Clean out the case
  2. Defrag your hard drive
  3. Add more RAM
  4. Back up files
  5. Add new hard drive
  6. Get new mouse or keyboard
  7. Perform maintenance
  8. Upgrade optical drive
  9. Upgrade video card
  10. Buy a UPS

These are some good tips, and the do-it-yourself types may even be able to upgrade the CPU and mainboard. That said I have seen new computers sell for less than you can buy upgrade components for so shop around and beware that opening up your computer will likely void the warranty.
