A few weeks ago we reported on a problem with the Oyster Smart Cards used in the London Underground that made the cards inoperable after swiping. Today the Times Online reports that the Oyster Underground system is down again.

Apparently thousands of commuters got a free ride since the payment system was down. The barriers remained open while the system was down and Transport for London reports that it lost tens of thousands of pounds in lost fares.

One station supervisor said, “People haven’t been inconvenienced too much - in effect, Pay As You Go customers are getting a free ride. I’m sure they’re going to lose money but whoever is in charge of the IT system is going to have to foot the bill.”
