Ofcom confirms that three new Freeview HD channels will be offered by the end of 2009. The BBC, ITV, and Channel 4 will each be offering new HD channels over ungraded terrestrial TV platform according to broadcast regulators.

TV watchers wanting to watch the new channels will need to buy a new set top box compatible with the DVB-T2 standard and MPEG-4. The new transmission and encoding allows more data to be streamed through the current Freeview spectrum.

It is unknown what programs will be offered over the new HD channels, but you can bet the most popular shows will be there. The first location to get the new channels next year will be Granada followed in order by Scotland, Wales, and the West Country.
