The word is that Motorola is preparing a new Android smartphone that will likely not ship until sometime next year, leaving the G1 from T-Mobile as the only likely Android device available over this holiday season.

The Motorola handset is reported to look very similar to the G1 with a touchscreen and a sliding QWERTY keyboard. The phone is supposedly going to be focused on social networking for accessing Facebook and MySpace.

Expected availability in the US for the Motorola handset is rumored to be Q2 2009. I haven’t seen anything on the Android OS that has been particularly impressive. It all looks like a copy of the iPhone to me.
