Acer has apparently adopted the VMedia Mini Blue laser optical discs. Macles reports about a new Acer Aspire One 571 that features a tiny VMedia disc drive and a 10.1 Inch screen with HD resolution of 1280x720px, a resolution ideal for movie watching.

To decode HD video Acer has apparently added a Quartics Q1721 Multimedia Coprocessor to assist the Atom N280.
This new Acer Aspire One 571 is rather surprising. This Acer netbook tries really hard to be a portable movie player. Since VMedia is not a proven format yet, I am not sure what to think of it. VMedia discs just have storage of 1GB and remind very much on Sony's UMD discs and we know how well that goes.
There is no word yet if the 571 is actually going on sale anytime soon.
