O2 has announced a new type of cellular phone charger called the O2 Universal Charger. The device claims to be able to reduce energy consumption by up to 70% compared to a standard charger.

Inside the device is a power control system that significantly cuts the power going to a mobile phone once the battery is fully charged. O2 says that cell phones left on the charger too long cost the UK up to £30m in waster energy each year.

O2 says that using its charger on the 73 million mobile phones in the UK could save carbon emissions in equivalent to 36,000 cars per year. The charger will cost £7.49 if purchased with a phone.
