Of the different UK broadcasters, Channel 4 and Channel 5 are among the smaller. According to reports, the two channels could be forced to merge after Channel 4 has come under financial trouble.

Both the stations are owned by the same company, RTL-Berstelmann. Reports claim that channel 4 needs about £150 million per year to merely break even and the poor economy has made the stations financial troubles even worse.

Options to save the station include merging it with Channel 5, privatizing the station, which is now publically owned by commercially funded, partnering with BBC Worldwide, or finding more public money to keep the station alive.
