Lord Carter has pledged to bring speedy 2Mbps Internet connections to all homes in the UK. According to PointTopic many areas of the country are out of reach of Internet speeds that quick. Ireland is the most out of reach with 30% of its homes outside areas that offer 2Mbps.

In Wales, things are only a bit better with 26.9% of homes unable to get 2Mbps or above. London on the other hand has a mere 1.2% of its population outside the range of 2Mbps connectivity.

Mobile broadband offers hope to get all of the country up to the 2Mbps threshold, but many think that mobile broadband isn't up to the task The big issues are the fact that the service drops of in speed the more people use it and its more expensive than fixed line service. Another potential issue is the often-miniscule monthly download limits that are attached to mobile service.
