Skype was sold to eBay in 2005 for the tidy sum of $2.6 billion and the two who sold the service to eBay eventually made in the area of $3.1 billion on the service after bonus payments. Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis are looking to buy the service they founded back from eBay.

The pair are said to be pooling resources to attempt to purchase Skype back from eBay. According to reports, eBay is peddling the service for $1.7 billion, about $1 billion less than they purchased the service for in 2005.

EBay is looking to sell the service after failing to do much with it since it made the purchase. The Skype application for the iPhone and Rim devices has proven popular.
