Virgin Media will start migrating its 4 million users away from its own email service and onto Gmail starting today. The three existing email systems Virgin Media runs today will be phased out.

The Register reports that at first only new customers will be invited to join Gmail and once 20,000 new customers are signed up for Gmail Virgin will begin asking existing customers to switch.

New customers will get the same 7GB of inbox space that Virgin offered with its own email service and the same features including POP3 and IMAP. Subscribers will be able to keep their @virginmedia.com and other virgin email suffixes.
