Microsoft is one of the most profitable companies in the world and is the biggest software maker on the planet. The company has been successful to the point where sales have gone up every year since the company began.

The current global economy has resulted in Microsoft posting its first sales drop in company history. Revenue for the third quarter was $13.65 billion, down six percent from the year before. Net income was $2.98 billion, down 32%.

Microsoft it's surely being affected by the downturn in the computer industry resulting in less machines shipped, therefore less sales for Microsoft as well. Microsoft has already shed 5,000 jobs and may shed more before the economy rebounds.
