Blackberry smartphones have outsold the iPhone for Q1 2009 according to NPD group. The catch is to pull ahead of the iPhone, Verizon had to give Blackberry handsets away with its Buy One, Get One promotion.

It also has to irk RIM that it has multiple Blackberry models and they need to be combined to outsell the single iPhone model. That makes me wonder what iPhone sales would look like if it was on multiple carriers and had several models to choose from.

Some feel that the slipping sales are a clear indicator that Apple is about to launch new iPhone models. If that is true, we should know in roughly a month when IDC kicks off in June.
