If you're looking to pick up an iPhone 3GS in the next couple of days, you might have a bit of a wait on your hands. The new iPhone continues to show sales so high that Apple is having trouble keeping it on the shelf. Last year, when the original 3G launched, Apple put up an availability tool to allow prospective customers to see whether or not iPhones were sold out in their area.

Now the tool is back to help customers deal with the release of the iPhone 3GS. The availability tool came back Friday, at which point 29 of the 257 Apple stores showed shortages of one iPhone or another. As of today, all but six states are registering one model or another as entirely sold out. For example, in Texas the 16 GB white iPhone is sold out in 12 out of 15 stores. Apparently no one has been dissuaded by the white iPhone overheating issue.

The 3G iPhone is still available in all stores. In order to check the availability of a specific type of iPhone in your area, you can use the availability tool here.
