Nokia typically produces smartphones running on the open source Symbian platform. However, rumors are surfacing that have the Finnish company looking to release a new smartphone running the Google Android OS.

The device would reportedly use a touchscreen and could be unveiled as early as September at the Nokia World conference. Nokia is struggling to gain traction in a changing mobile market dominated by smartphones.

In 2007, half of all smartphones sold were Nokia units. By the end of 2008, that share of the market had dropped to 31%. Smartphones are expected to be 29% of all handset sales in coming years.
