The UK regulatory agency Ofcom has released maps detailing the 3G coverage for the UK. The maps show that users traveling anywhere with a topology that isn’t smooth and flat are out of luck.

In other words, that 3G modem in the highlands isn't likely to work. The release of the coverage maps comes as a result of a Freedom of Information request lodged by Simon Fluendy who claimed the regulator didn’t have a map.

The request also asked for 2G coverage maps, which were not provided. I guess Ofcom figures that UK mobile users don’t care about 2G coverage.
