Twitter was offline a couple of hours ago and now we know why. According to Twitter's blog, The DNS records were temporarily compromised.
TechCrunch reports that the home page was redirected briefly to a hacker page.

Since it was a DNS re-direct the Twitter servers have not been compromised, which means your data is still safe.
