Orange is set to launch a new HD Voice service in the UK this year. The new service promises better sound quality and a better voice range for the caller. The catch to the new service is that customers will need a new handset that supports the feature.

Orange is working with handset makers already with devices promised to be coming later this year. That is a very vague time frame considering the year has only just started. The launch of the HD voice service is the result of two years of investments in the UK network according to Orange.

The service uses WB-AMR speech codec with a wider bandwidth of 50-7000Hz compared to the current speech codec providing 300-3400Hz. Orange says the tech makes the caller seem like they are in the same room.
