One of the big problems for many people with small netbooks and ultraportable computers is that they tend to lack optical drives to save space. Samsung has announced a new slim external optical drive called the SE-S084D that reads and writes DVDs.

The drive is small and power efficient enough that it can be powered by the USB port alone, needing no external power adapter. The drive has a rounded shape and is 20% smaller than conventional DVD burners.

The drive is compatible with Windows 7 and Mac computers. It also integrates Buffer Under Run technology to prevent errors from writing at speeds that exceed transfer rates. The drive will ship globally in Q2 2010 at an undisclosed price.
