Long ago when I picked up my 30-inch Dell LCD I thought the more than $1000 it cost was a lot of money for a display. NEC has unveiled a new 70-inch display called the P701 that is aimed at the digital signage market and has a price tag that makes my 30-inch LCD seem dirt cheap. The P701 will ship in March for $11,799.

For that much scratch you get a huge 70-inch screen with 1920 x 1080 resolution and a 2000:1 contrast ratio. The screen has a 420 cd/m2 brightness rating with 600 cd/m2 maximum brightness. The display has integrated thermal protection and internal temperature sensors.

The panel uses a sealed design to protect against dust, grease, and steam and has an integrated expansion slot for connectivity. The screen has an internal clock and scheduler to turn the display off on a schedule to save power. A version of the screen will also be offered with an integrated tuner called the P701-AVT in March.
