Asus has some extremely lofty dreams. Digitimes reports that the company has just finalized the spin-off of its manufacturing arm, Pegatron. Asus Chairman Jonney Shih stated that the company intends to become another Apple, based around open-source platforms instead of closed internal ecosystems.

One way to read this is as a declaration of war on Apple. In the same article, Shih stated that his company will be launching a “killer product” in June. What else could it be but the Eee Pad? By all accounts, Asustek's tablet is set to be a cheaper, open-source counter to the iPad. If any company has a chance at beating Apple in design, it is Asus.(Photo courtesy of Engadget)
