We are nowhere near the capability of science fiction with robots today. We may never field a droid army or have terminators striding across the battlefield rather than human soldiers. However, there are robots in use with armed forces and police around the world today.

One of the major providers of robots for the military is iRobot. The company has announced that it has delivered its 3,000th PackBot tactical mobile robot. The robot first debuted in 2002 and it is used by the military to inspect suspicious objects and in other situations from a distance.

The PackBot can be fitted for different usages including ordinance disposal. The bot streams video from a camera mounted on the chassis and an array of sensors. The PackBot is controlled by a game-style hand controller for fast training and easier operation.
