Virgin Galactic today has sent off a press announcement stating that their VSS Enterprise has finished its first captive carry flight. Both the mothership (which carries the space ship up into the atmosphere) and the space ship are in good shape and performed admirably. It's not quite a moon landing, but spaceships don't look much cooler than that.

The success of a captive carry flight is just the start, but it is a very big start. The flight program will run through 2010 and 2011. The next steps are to go up to independent glide and then move to powered flight. Once everything is tried and tested, they'll be ready to begin commercial operations.
