Sony has dropped the price of its digital Reader device to $170 for a limited time through the first week in April... *cough cough* That's right when the iPad will be released.

The basic edition of the Sony Reader is now $170, a $30 cut from the normal $200 tag. It's a noticeable difference from the iPad, which will be priced at $300 for the entry-level model.

Even at $200, the Reader is the most affordable of all the leading e-book devices (Kindle, iPad, Nook). It also has the largest retail presence because of its significant head start in the market, coming out years before the Kindle even had a name.

The other Sony Reader devices were not part of the price cut, and the base model cut is only temporary until April 3rd.
