My PS3 is one of the first ones that launched years ago. The machine has had the option for me to install another OS, though I have never felt the need to do so. If you have always thought in the back of your mind that you need to get around to installing that other OS on your PS3, you may have waited too long.

The new PS3 firmware update is out and brings the machine to version 3.21. The update specifically removes the ability to add an alternate Os to standard PS3 models. Sony says it removed the option as a security improvement.

The real rub is that if you use the alternative Os feature and your Os is already installed you can’t update or you will lose the ability to use the OS. That presumably means that you will never be able to update your PS3 again and continue to use your alternative Os. That also means no 3D update for you if that alternative OS is important.
