The iPad's success was far from a foregone conclusion. They took a legitimate risk with the tablet form factor and some of their design choices. Clearly, the risk was worth the reward. The iPad is basically the hottest thing in the tech industry right now. CNET reports that Best Buy has sold out of iPads just four days into the launch.

All 673 Best Buys are totally out of stock. They aren't expected to carry more iPads again until Sunday. Apple stores do not appear to have the same problem. They report selling out late in the afternoon, and then receiving new stock every morning. It's clear that Apple is giving restocking preference to their own stores.

That makes sense; stories of big-box retailers selling out of iPads can't be BAD for business. If anything, Best Buy selling out of the iPad will just add to its hype-engine.
