WiMax? How old school. It's all about WiMax 2 now. A cadre of leading industry figures have just sent out a press release announcing their support for the new interoperable technology. WiMax 2 is based on the 802.16m standard, which improves on the current 16e standard while remaining backwards compatible. It promises “peak” rates of over 300 Mbps.

The 802.16m air interface is expected to be ready by 2H 2010. Alvarion, Beceem, GCT Semiconductor, Intel, Motorola, Samsung, Sequans, XRONet, ZTE, and ITRI have all come out in favor of this new standard. They've formed the WiMax 2 collaboration initiative (WCI) and are working with the WiMax forum to speed up the adoption of WiMax 2.
