Apple announced a record quarter this week and so did also Microsoft yesterday.
Microsoft and Apple are in the same industry, but very different. What is not very different anymore is their market capitalization. Apple is closing in on Microsoft with its recent stock hike following the earning announcement.

Business Insider plotted the Market Cap of both companies on a nice graph.
MarketWatch reported that if you look at the float-adjusted market cap of S&P 500 then Apple already surpassed Microsoft.

Analysts predict Apple's stock to rise above $300. Apple will most likely surpass Microsoft soon in overall Market Cap.
