The iPad 3G sold out during its first weekend of sales. Gene Munster, an analyst with Piper Jaffray, estimates that the hot new gadget sold some 300,000 units over the course of the weekend. This includes pre-ordered iPad 3Gs.

Munster talked with some 50 Apple retail stores and was in attendance in person for the launch of the iPad 3G in New York and Minneapolis. His estimate would place 3G first-weekend sales even with WiFi-only first day sales. Munster now believes Apple has sold over 1 million iPads.

Take these numbers with a big grain of salt. Gene was way off in his first estimate of WiFi iPad sales, and it is very possible that he is under-estimating the Jobsian wonder-toy again. More reliable sales estimates should trickle out over the next few days.
