Sega's newest entry to the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise may be going back to the old-school roots, but there's something about it that can't escape the current state of video games: annoying delays.
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is to be the real sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog 3, a game that was released on the Sega Genesis in 1994 and what many consider to be the last authentic Sonic platformer.

While Sonic Adventure was sold respectably well on the what-was-ultimately-a-flop Dreamcast system, the blue mascot's more recent endeavors have struck criticism amongst reviewers all around the Web.

So it was back to the drawing board for Sega, and now Sonic 4 promises to bring back the fast-paced, colorful, arcade feel of the old-school gaming legacy.

It had been scheduled for release in the early summer of this year, but now Sega says it's being pushed back "to ensure that we’re delivering the best Sonic experience possible."

In a statement on Sega's official blog, the delay was explained as such: "The additional time will allow the development team to focus on ensuring overall high-quality throughout the game by continuing to tune, balance, and maintain the kind of polish that an important title like this demands."

The game will actually be a series of episodic downloads, so the Sonic 4 experience will continue on for much longer than the initial download; new levels will be added as time goes on.
