Nearly 5 million people have downloaded the Skype iPhone 3G application since its launch on Sunday. Reuters reports that the total number of downloads was at nearly 5 million on Wednesday morning, making this one of the fastest-selling applications in the App Store's history. Most of the demand was seen in Europe, North America and Asia Pacific.

Skype plans to start charging for 3G calls between Skype users next year. Pricing is said to be “competitive”, but any charge for Skype-to-Skype calling is bound to anger long-time users of the service. When something has been free for years, getting people to shell out money for it is always a painful endeavour.
