Canon has whipped out a new CMOS sensor that claims to have the industry's highest resolution for its size. The sensor is an APS-H-size CMOS sensor that has 120MP resolution. The typical sensor of its size has only 16.1 million pixels.

Canon has crammed 120 million pixels onto its new CMOS sensor for an increase of 7.5 times with a 2.4 times increase in resolution. The sensor uses a new method to control the readout circuit and an increase in parallel-processing signal count to get the higher resolution.

The new sensor also has full 1080p video output capability using 1/60 of its sensor surface area. The sensor physically measures 29.2 x 20.2mm. There is no word on when cameras using the new sensor might come to market.
