Sony is mum on what the update actually fixes

Sony has launched a new PS3 update that is required f you want to access the PlayStation Network or the PlayStation Store. The update adds no new features and only promises vague stability updates.

Apparently, what the new firmware version 3.42 is really for is to stop that software jailbreak tool for being able to liberate your PS3 to run home brew software and play games from the HDD. Sony fought the PSJailbreak USB dongle in Australian courts recently and won a permanent injunction.

Sony hasn't come clean and stated that preventing the software jailbreak is the reason for the firmware at this point. That is the strong suspicion though considering nothing else appears to have been changed on the console.
