Here they come to save the day!

BlackBerry has just announced the imminent coming of something called a "Super-App". The most intriguing example of this "new" category of applications is the Phone Halo app, which hooks up to your keys via a Bluetooth dongle. The dongle can ring your BlackBerry if it gets lost, and your BlackBerry can locate your keys. You can also set the app to warn your friends if your phone drops out of signal range or gets lost.

Super-Apps will tie in closely with the BBM Social Platform, a new app platform that keeps you connected to your friends at all times. From within these apps you will be able to chat, invite friends to try the app, share content and swap real-time data. Everything from integrated e-books to chating with other readers and posingt quotations on Facebook, to a poker app you can play in real time with another BlackBerry user.

RIM's presenter made a big point of the fact that people purchase mobile phones in order to communicate with other people. Super-apps and the Social Platform are both spirited stabs at fulfilling that need. Sure, it isn't quite as interesting as the Playbook but it further proves RIM's commitment to turning their stodgy, corporate image around, while still maintaining their desirability to the enterprise market.
