Is this a problem for you?

If you have both Facebook and a smartphone, odds are good that you've used the "Contact Sync" feature. This matches up your friend's Facebook profile pictures and info with their phonebook entry. The app downloads profile pictures and other data and sticks it in your address book. But, as it turns out, this exchange of information goes both ways.

The Guardian reports that Contact Sync also imports all phone numbers and names on your mobile and uploads them to Facebook. Want to check if your phonebook has been uploaded to Facebook? Click this link. Kind of creepy, right?

The Contact Sync app has been altered to give users a warning, but it is the kind of warning that is virtually guaranteed to be ignored by the vast majority of users. That isn't really Facebook's fault, but the fact that these numbers are not automatically made private is. If your privacy settings are permissive enough, your phonebook could get out to the Internet.

For a lot of you, that won't be a problem. For the others...well, maybe it's time to look beyond Facebook.
