Who are these people again?

So get this. If you think people are confused about all the components needed to watch 3D TV content, you have no idea. Apparently a majority don't even realize they need one very important piece: a 3D TV.

Research firm Interpret found the alarming data in a survey. In it, 63% of people who own a game console were under the impression that once the console received a firmware upgrade, no matter what TV they owned they would be able to take advantage of the system's stereoscopic 3D output.

Of course, in reality, users must have a special 3D TV. Game console updates only give the console the ability to provide content to those high-end sets.

Another statistic from the survey showed 83% of all consumers believed that all 3D content requires viewers to wear 3D glasses. That is largely true, however there are digital photo frames and some expensive signage products that show images with the perception of depth without the need for glasses. It's a technology known as autostereoscopic 3D.

This technology will become much more mainstream when Nintendo launches its 3DS handheld system next year and some TV manufacturers begin to deploy it in mass-market TVs.

Along with consumers still being very confused about how it all works, only a small portion are even interested. 87% said they were not in the market to buy a 3D TV. Only 10%, though, said they will never buy one.
