The Verizon iPhone is supposed to be a sure thing in 2011. I already mentioned that Apple would land the biggest marketing splash with releasing an LTE supporting iPhone. The question is if they need that.

TechCrunch just published a report that claims that Apple will release the 2011 iPhone with GSM and CDMA support. The dual mode iPhone would then work on Verizon and AT&T. A 4G iPhone would come earliest in 2012.

Apple might be able to afford to not jump on the LTE bandwagon first. They can wait until the coverage is there and the technical issues are ironed out. Unless the Android and Windows Phone are gaining much more ground, in which case Apple also needs to support LTE with the iPhone 5 to not go under.
